Surge Protection

Power surges are unpredictable and may have multiple causes such as sudden voltage changes on a circuit, faulty appliances, storms, or provide faults in the electricity provider. As electronic wiring is steadily becoming more complicated, even slight power surges in such electric systems can cause major damage that can sometimes be irreparable.

Frequently power surges are a result of an interruption in the flow of power, then established directing or again power back in the infrastructure, like by lightning. Though we attribute lightning as the primary cause of the majority of power strikes, it merely accounts for approximately 2% of these cases. It is approximated that greater than 50% of the power surges that happen appear from high voltage appliances or compressors disrupting power flow in your home. This happens many times through the day, mostly when equipment with motors powers up or shuts down, directing electricity from and into other equipment. This behaviour is more widespread in appliances such as fridges, air-conditioners and kettles.

How a surge protector works

The live wire or primary power line at a surge protector contains an additional linked connection that feeds into an earth wire. A ground wire’s purpose is to direct any extra current safely to the ground. The surge connection from the protector remains inactive until a larger than normal voltage seems. This excess current is then securely redirected through the extra earth wire, directly into the floor. This prevents more current than normal from flowing to your appliances efficiently making sure that they are protected from any injury that could result from power surges.
