Any extra current is diverted safely to the floor through the ground wire. The surge link remains in a dormant state until a voltage that is excessive compared to a standard one causes it to direct additional current to the ground during the extra wire. This prevents excessive current from flowing into your house appliances thus shielding them from damage.
